Kitty's Parents — Animation Character Design Drawing

Object ID PB-0000-1-PG-0-10

Context

This drawing depicts Kitty Pryde’s parents as considered during early development of Pryde of the X-Men, the 1989 animated television pilot produced by Marvel Productions for first-run syndication as part of the Marvel Action Universe block. The pilot was conceived as a test episode for a proposed X-Men series that was not carried forward in this form.

Unlike other surviving design material tied directly to the finished pilot, this sheet records a preliminary stage of planning. Kitty’s parents do not appear in the completed broadcast version, and the episode instead begins with Kitty’s arrival at Xavier’s school, with family life left outside the final narrative structure. The drawing is therefore best understood as evidence of preproduction development, when additional characters and narrative possibilities were still under consideration.

The sheet belongs to Russ Heath’s later animation work. Heath is credited in connection with Pryde of the X-Men, and the pilot was animated using designs by him. In this setting, character design drawings functioned as studio documents used to test, define, and stabilize form before animation production. Surviving preliminary drawings of this kind are especially useful as records of decision-making within the development process, including material that was revised or omitted before final release.

This example is graphite over blue pencil on paper and measures 8.5 × 11 inches (21.59 × 27.94 cm). It remains in production-used condition consistent with studio materials and production use. The drawing originates from animation production material associated with studio development and has been maintained in archival storage; the artist’s initials appear at the lower right of the sheet.
