RoboCop — Animation Character Design Drawing
Context
This drawing depicts RoboCop as adapted for the 1988 animated television series RoboCop, produced by Marvel Productions in association with Orion Pictures Corporation and syndicated as part of the Marvel Action Universe block. Based on the 1987 film, the animated series reconfigured the property for younger viewers, shifting its emphasis toward a more overtly science-fiction setting while preserving the central figure of Alex Murphy as the cyborg police officer RoboCop.
The sheet belongs to Russ Heath’s later period of work in animation, following his move to California in 1978, when he became active in television production design and related studio work. In that setting, character design drawings functioned as production documents used to define form, stabilize appearance, and support consistency across collaborative workflows.
This example is graphite, blue pencil, and white correction fluid on three-peg animation paper and measures 10.5 × 12.5 inches (26.67 × 31.75 cm). It remains in production-used condition consistent with studio materials and use; the sheet retains areas of correction fluid and a pasted-up gun element. The drawing originates from animation production material associated with studio development and has been maintained in archival storage. The artist’s initials appear at the lower right of the sheet.
